Legendary R&B Group Shalamar Returns to Nigeria After 40 Years to Headline Independence Concert

Nigerian music lovers are in for a treat as the iconic American R&B group Shalamar is set to headline a historic concert in Abuja to celebrate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day. The Grammy-winning trio, known for timeless classics like “A Night To Remember” and “I Can Make You Feel Good,” will perform on October 4, 2025, at the International Conference Centre.

This highly anticipated show marks Shalamar’s first performance in Nigeria in over four decades, reigniting a connection with a fan base that has cherished their music for generations. The group’s previous visit was in January 1982, when they performed a series of sold-out shows in Lagos, Ibadan, and Ile-Ife, leaving a lasting impact on Nigeria’s music scene.

According to organizers, the event is not merely a concert but a “gift to all generations.” The show is designed to be a “nostalgic, music-filled trip down memory lane” for old-school fans while introducing their legendary sound to a new audience. The group’s members, Howard Hewett, Carolyn Griffey, and the famous dance innovator Jeffrey Daniel (who is credited with pioneering the “backslide” dance move), have all expressed their excitement about the return.

The concert is one of the key events planned to mark the Independence Day celebrations, offering a blend of international flair and a deep appreciation for music that has stood the test of time.
