Lagos Launches Drainage Initiative to Curb Flooding on Lagos Island

The Lagos State Government has initiated the construction of natural water flow channels along key road networks in flood-prone areas of Lagos Island, as part of a broader regeneration strategy.

The initiative aims to address the persistent flooding issues, upgrade road infrastructure, and enhance living conditions for residents. It forms a core component of the state’s master plan to revitalize Lagos Island and improve urban resilience.

The project was announced during the groundbreaking ceremony for an ultra-modern shopping mall at the site of the former Pelewura iron rod market in Adeniji Adele.

Spearheaded by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development through the Office of Urban Development, in collaboration with the Lagos Island Local Council Development Area, the drainage project is slated for completion within a year.

In a statement obtained by Saturday PUNCH, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, emphasized the importance of restoring natural drainage channels.

“Technically, Lagos Island isn’t below sea level, but its proximity makes effective drainage management critical,” Olumide said. “Our plan involves removing structures obstructing natural water paths, returning the area to a time when drains flowed freely. I remember making paper boats with friends as a child—water used to run unimpeded. That’s the environment we aim to restore.”

Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Development, Olajide Abiodun, described the new shopping mall as a beacon of urban renewal for the island. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Lagos Island LCDA, Folawiyo Alade, assured residents that the project would be delivered within the stipulated timeframe.
