Explosion at Ogun Barracks Causes No Casualties, says Army

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that there were no casualties in an explosion that rocked the Alamala Barracks in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Friday morning. The incident was a result of an accidental detonation of an old ordnance within the barracks’ ammunition depot.

In a statement, the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Olufemi Oluyede, reassured the public that the situation was under control and there was no cause for alarm. He said that the explosion occurred around 9:00 AM and that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.

“The accidental detonation of an old ordnance at the Alamala Barracks’ ammunition depot this morning caused a loud bang that was heard across parts of Abeokuta,” Major General Oluyede stated. “We can confirm that there were no casualties, fatalities, or injuries to personnel or civilians.”

While there were no casualties, the blast did cause minor damage, shattering windows in some of the buildings within the barracks and the immediate vicinity. The Army has since cordoned off the area and has commenced a full investigation into the cause of the accidental detonation.

Major General Oluyede appealed to the residents of Abeokuta to remain calm and avoid the area to allow military personnel to manage the situation and ensure the safety of everyone. He reiterated the Army’s commitment to the safety of its personnel and host communities.
