2027 Elections: Atiku Delays Formal ADC Entry Amid Talk of Jonathan’s Political Resurgence

2027: Atiku Delays ADC Membership Card Collection Amid Jonathan Comeback Speculation

Our Correspondent – August 10, 2025

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has delayed his planned formal entry into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid growing speculation that former President Goodluck Jonathan may join the party ahead of the 2027 presidential race..Atiku, who recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after prolonged internal disputes, was scheduled to collect his ADC membership card in his hometown of Jada, Adamawa State, on Wednesday, August 6. The event was expected to be led by senior ADC officials.

However, our correspondent gathered that the ceremony was postponed indefinitely without an official explanation from Atiku’s camp.

Waiting for APC Defectors

According to the ADC chairman in Adamawa State, Shehu Yohana, Atiku told him the event had been shifted to mid-August, with no fixed date yet.

“From the way things are going, the event may even take place in September,” Yohana said. “He mentioned that he is waiting for some All Progressives Congress governors who plan to decamp to ADC before holding his reception in Jada.”

Tension Over Atiku, Obi, and Jonathan

An ADC chieftain at the national level, who requested anonymity, told our correspondent that the delay could be linked to internal political manoeuvres. He alleged that the Peter Obi political movement had gained significant control of ADC structures in the South, potentially complicating Atiku’s 2027 ambitions.

The source further revealed that the party has been holding discreet talks with Jonathan about a possible presidential run, claiming the former president had responded positively.

“We have met him three times. He knows the problems in PDP and won’t want to wrestle with Nyesom Wike, who controls the party. He’s a gentleman and a refined politician,” the chieftain said.

Asked if Jonathan would be given an automatic ticket, the source replied, “When we get to the bridge, we will cross it.”

Posters and Public Statements

Jonathan’s campaign posters have reportedly surfaced on social media, pairing him with Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal or former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as potential running mates.

However, on May 11, Jonathan’s wife, Patience Jonathan, ruled out a return to the presidency, pledging support to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in 2027.

“I believe in one president at a time. When it’s your turn, I will support you. When it’s not your turn, step back so the country can move forward,” she said at an awards ceremony in Abuja.

Atiku’s Camp Responds

Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, dismissed claims that the delay was due to Jonathan’s possible ADC move or any political rivalry.

“Nothing has changed. Atiku Abubakar registered as a member of the ADC in Jada Ward, Adamawa State, and the process is still on. Nothing has been suspended,” Ibe said.

He stressed that Atiku welcomes competition and is not intimidated by the ambitions of Jonathan, Obi, or any other potential contender.
