Senate Leader Bamidele Refutes ‘Rubber Stamp’ Allegations, Citing Extensive Legislative Scrutiny

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has addressed criticisms from opposition parties labeling the National Assembly as a “rubber stamp” for the executive branch. He emphasized that the legislative body’s thorough examination of the 2024 Tax Reform Bills demonstrates its independence and commitment to due process.

Bamidele highlighted that the Tax Reform Bills, introduced in November 2024, underwent six months of rigorous scrutiny before their eventual passage. During this period, the National Assembly and the executive engaged in over 39 meetings to resolve various concerns and ensure the legislation served the public interest.

“If we were truly a rubber-stamp institution, these bills would have been passed within a week or two,” Bamidele stated. “Instead, we prioritized comprehensive stakeholder engagement, including consultations with civil society organizations, professional bodies, religious leaders, and industry experts.”

He further cited the 2025 Appropriation Act as evidence of the Assembly’s diligence. Although the budget was presented on December 18, 2024, it was not passed until February 13, 2025, allowing ample time for thorough review and necessary adjustments.

Bamidele concluded by reaffirming the National Assembly’s dedication to good governance and legislative integrity, asserting that its actions are guided by the nation’s best interests rather than executive influence.
