Makinde Reaffirms Commitment to PDP Amid Defections, Emphasizes People’s Power in 2027 Elections

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has firmly declared his unwavering loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing the recent wave of defections as inconsequential to the party’s mission. Speaking at the inauguration of the newly elected PDP South West Zonal Executive members in Ibadan, Makinde emphasized that the party’s strength lies in its connection with the Nigerian populace, not in political maneuvering.

“People have been asking us as leaders of this party that a lot of people are decamping, even governors, and some others are threatening to decamp and all of that. And they said, look, where is this party going?” Makinde remarked. “Well, I have good news; I said to the people that we will not be bothered until hunger has decamped to the ruling party, APC. The day hunger decamps, they should come and tell us and, then, we will know what to do.”

He further asserted that the 2027 general elections would not be determined by political elites but by the everyday Nigerians grappling with economic hardships. “Because there is hunger in the land and majority of the people that are hungry would determine what 2027 would look like. So, don’t be bothered. If any governors like, let them decamp. We will stay with the people of Nigeria,” Makinde stated.

Makinde’s comments come amid a series of defections from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including some high-profile figures. Despite these shifts, Makinde remains confident in the PDP’s resilience and its commitment to addressing the needs of Nigerians.

The governor’s stance underscores a broader message: that political loyalty should be rooted in service to the people, and that the true power in a democracy lies with the electorate.
