Speaker Abbas Advocates Agricultural Innovation as Key to Nigeria’s Economic Diversification

Amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has emphasized the critical role of agriculture in achieving broad-based economic resilience. He highlighted the need for substantial investment in agricultural research and development to reduce the nation’s over-reliance on oil revenues.

Speaking at a public hearing on eleven bills aimed at establishing and enhancing agricultural colleges and institutions, Abbas, represented by Deputy Chief Whip Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka, underscored the urgency of restructuring Nigeria’s agricultural sector. He pointed to international examples, noting that countries like Brazil, Vietnam, and Israel have transformed their economies through strategic investments in agricultural innovation.

Abbas advocated for the expansion of agricultural research centers across Nigeria, asserting that such institutions are vital for unlocking new insights in crop production, pest control, and climate-smart agriculture. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening extension services to bridge the gap between research and practical application, ensuring that innovations reach farmers at the grassroots level.

The Speaker’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria’s agriculture sector, despite its vast potential, faces challenges such as outdated practices, limited access to modern technology, and the impacts of climate change. By prioritizing agricultural research and education, Abbas believes Nigeria can emulate global success stories and achieve sustainable economic growth.

The proposed legislation under consideration aims to provide a robust legal and operational framework for agricultural institutions, positioning them to drive innovation and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic diversification efforts.
