FG and Yobe State Launch Subsidized Rice Initiative for Civil Servants Amid Economic Challenges

In a concerted effort to alleviate the impact of rising food prices, the Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the Yobe State Government, has initiated the sale of 6,000 bags of 50kg rice at a subsidized rate of ₦40,000 per bag. This initiative targets state and federal civil servants, as well as members of the organized private sector within Yobe State.

Dr. Mohammed Goje, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), announced that Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed the immediate commencement of the sales process. The distribution plan allocates 70% (4,200 bags) to state civil servants and the organized private sector, while the remaining 30% (1,800 bags) are designated for federal ministries, departments, and agencies operating within the state.

To ensure transparency and accountability, a high-level stakeholders’ meeting was convened, chaired by Brig. Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters. The meeting included representatives from the Office of the Head of Service, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), SEMA, the Nigerian Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Agro-Rangers.

Each verified civil servant is eligible to purchase one 50kg bag of rice at the subsidized rate. Verification will involve a strict screening process, requiring valid office identification cards and National Identification Numbers (NIN). The distribution details and sharing formula will be communicated through respective ministries, departments, and agencies via the Office of the Head of Service, in collaboration with civil service unions.

This initiative aligns with Governor Buni’s early recovery and post-conflict agenda, aiming to ensure fair access to essential commodities and support the welfare of civil servants amid economic challenges.
