Former NCAA DG Highlights Infrastructure and Policy Deficiencies as Key Barriers to Nigeria’s Aviation Growth
Captain Willie Unegbe, a former Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has identified critical shortcomings in infrastructure investment and the absence of a cohesive national aviation policy as primary factors impeding the growth of Nigeria’s aviation sector. In a recent interview, Unegbe emphasized that the country’s outdated airport facilities and inadequate security measures have hindered the industry’s development. He contrasted Nigeria’s situation with that of other African nations like Ghana, Rwanda, and Ethiopia, which have made significant strides by investing heavily in modern aviation infrastructure and implementing clear strategic policies.
Unegbe also pointed out the lack of a comprehensive national aviation policy in Nigeria, which he believes is essential for providing a framework for investment, infrastructure development, and regulatory reforms. He cited Rwanda’s clear aviation strategy as a model that has enabled the country to become a regional hub for air travel.
The former NCAA DG’s observations underscore the urgent need for Nigeria to address these challenges by investing in infrastructure, developing a clear aviation policy, and promoting regulatory reforms to realize its potential as a major aviation hub in Africa.
