UPDATED: El-Rufai dumps APC for SDP

El-Rufai Quits APC, Joins SDP Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Kaduna State Governor and founding APC member, Nasir El-Rufai, has left the ruling party for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing a misalignment of values.

In a statement posted on his X handle on Monday, El-Rufai expressed disappointment with APC’s leadership, accusing the party of straying from its founding ideals.

“As a founding member, I had hoped my values and those of the APC would remain aligned until my retirement from politics. However, recent developments confirm that the party’s current leadership is unwilling to address its unhealthy trajectory,” he stated.

El-Rufai revealed that he had submitted his resignation letter and, after consulting with mentors and loyalists, opted for the SDP. He vowed to rally opposition figures under a unified platform to challenge the APC in upcoming elections.

The former governor had previously criticized the APC’s National Executive Council and Board of Trustees for failing to hold meetings last year. He also skipped a recent stakeholders’ meeting at the Presidential Villa, citing procedural lapses.

His defection follows a recent meeting in Lagos with former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola and Pastor Tunde Bakare, fueling speculation about his political realignment ahead of 2027.

El-Rufai urged his supporters to join the SDP, pledging to work toward restoring Nigeria’s status as a beacon of hope for Africa and the Black race.
