NYSC Members Call Out DG Over Unfulfilled N77,000 Allowance Promise
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have criticized the Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, for failing to fulfill his promise of an increased monthly allowance.
During the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream II orientation camp in Katsina State, Brigadier General Ahmed had assured corps members that their monthly stipend would be increased to N77,000 starting February 2025. He stated that the increment was included in the 2025 Federal Government budget and would take effect once the budget was passed.
“This month (January) has already ended, but once the budget is passed, by next month (February), you will start receiving N77,000 instead of the usual N33,000,” he had declared.
However, when corps members received their February allowance, many were disappointed to find that they had only been paid N33,000—the usual amount—despite the promise of an increase.
Speaking to our correspondent, a corps member serving in Lagos expressed frustration over the situation.
“The government has started implementing the new minimum wage in various agencies, yet we, as ‘government children,’ have been left behind. It’s painful because we see funds being allocated for different projects, but our allowance remains stagnant. N33,000 isn’t even enough for transportation for two weeks,” he lamented.
Further inquiries revealed that no corps member had received the promised N77,000, raising concerns over whether the allowance increment would ever be implemented.
