The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned a threat made by a Canada-based woman, Amaka Sunnberger, against Nigerians of Yoruba and Benin descent.
In a video clip that began trending online on Tuesday, the woman was heard making anti-Yoruba and Benin remarks during a live virtual TikTok meeting. Speaking mainly in Pidgin English, she threatened to poison people from these ethnic groups.at work.
Following the incident, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, revealed the woman’s identity, and the House of Representatives called for her immediate arrest. In a post on his official X handle on Thursday, Atiku emphasized that this ethnic slur highlights the urgent need to unite Nigerians. He also praised the swift actions of the House of Representatives and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission in addressing the situation.
He wrote, “The disturbing virtual chat room clip, where participants threatened ethnic cleansing against Yoruba’s and Benin people, is unequivocally condemned. I’ve been informed that the identities of those involved have been revealed and that Canadian law enforcement agencies have been urged to take action.
“In this context, I commend the House of Representatives and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission for their prompt and decisive actions in addressing this inflammatory rhetoric and preventing further escalation.
“This troubling incident highlights, once again, the vital importance of uniting our people and our nation. Our rich diversity is our greatest national asset and must be fiercely protected.”
