“He served as a minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari but resigned to vie for the APC presidential primary.”
Former Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, has passed away at the age of 72. His death was confirmed by Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, his Imo State counterpart Hope Uzodimma, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in separate statements on Thursday. Onu passed away in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as announced by Uzodimma.
Governor Nwifuru expressed shock and described Onu as an illustrious son of the state, emphasizing his significant contributions to the nation. He extended heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family and acknowledged Onu’s unwavering dedication to serving his people in various capacities.
The APC, through a brief statement on its official handle, mourned the loss of Onu, acknowledging him as a founding member of the party whose contributions were pivotal in its formation in 2013.
Onu, a former governor of Old Abia State, also served as Abia’s first civilian governor and contested the presidential candidacy of the All Progressives Party (APP) in 1999. He later stepped down in favor of Olu Falae when his party merged with the Action for Democracy (AD).
