ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Chief of Defence Staff to ensure swift action in identifying and punishing those accountable for the brutal killing of soldiers in Okuoma, Delta State. Expressing profound dismay over the incident, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen soldiers.
In a statement personally signed on Sunday, Tinubu conveyed his shock at the unprovoked attack on the soldiers during a peacekeeping mission in Okuoma Community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The tragic event unfolded on Thursday, March 14, 2024, when the troops, responding to a crisis between Okuama and Okoloba communities, fell into an ambush. Among the casualties were a Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain, and twelve soldiers, along with one civilian.
As the Commander-in-Chief, Tinubu mourned alongside fellow Nigerians and the armed forces, vowing that those responsible for the cowardly act would face justice.
He acknowledged the inherent risks faced by servicemen and women, praising their heroism, courage, and patriotism. Tinubu emphasized the nation’s duty to honor those who sacrificed for its safety and unity, noting that the fallen soldiers had joined the ranks of national heroes.
Stressing the centrality of the armed forces to national security, Tinubu condemned the attack as an assault on the nation itself. He granted full authority to the Defence Headquarters and Chief of Defence Staff to ensure that the perpetrators faced the consequences of their actions.
Tinubu concluded by affirming the government’s unwavering commitment to achieving peace and security across Nigeria, invoking divine blessings for the Federal Republic and its armed forces.
