Ekiti State Government Denies Involvement in Attack on Sowore, Calls for Investigation
The Ekiti State Government has distanced itself from allegations that it was involved in an attack on Omoyele Sowore, a presidential aspirant from the African Action Congress. This incident reportedly took place at a food canteen in Ado-Ekiti.
In a statement made on Saturday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Olayinka Oyebode, described the claims as unfounded. The government called on the police to thoroughly investigate the incident, identify those responsible, and ensure they face justice.
The government noted that it usually would not respond to such allegations, which it sees as part of a pattern of unfounded claims against the state administration over the past four years. However, it decided to speak out to prevent public misunderstanding.
Officials from the Ikogosi Marathon and the Ekiti State Police Command have also released statements regarding the incident. The government raised questions about Sowore’s motives for visiting and the circumstances surrounding the reported altercation.
It emphasized that it is absurd to suggest that Ekiti, described as a peaceful state, would harass a presidential candidate. The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security, ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors regardless of their political views.
Furthermore, the government expressed its dedication to upholding democratic principles and protecting the rights of everyone in Ekiti.
