Court Urges Quick Trials for Five Suspected Kidnappers in Imo State

A State High Court in Owerri, Imo State, is pushing for quick trials of five suspected kidnappers. The court wants both the prosecution and defense lawyers to work together to ensure that decisions are made before January 2027.

Judge Emeka Orafu made this request during a hearing involving three suspects accused of kidnapping members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and two others linked to a different kidnapping case.

During the hearing, an officer from the Department of State Services (DSS), Ikem Emmanuel, shared details about the investigation that led to the arrests. He explained that the investigation included gathering intelligence, analyzing phone data, and interviewing victims and witnesses.

Emmanuel also mentioned that an identification parade was held, where victims recognized the suspects as part of the criminal group. One suspect, Usman Aliyu, reportedly confessed to being involved and claimed that 11 people participated in the crime.

The judge adjourned the cases to October 27, 28, 29, and 30 for further hearings. He emphasized the importance of all lawyers cooperating with the court to speed up the process. The five suspects will remain in DSS custody as the case continues.

On October 1, 2026, gunmen kidnapped 20 corps members near Umunoha while they were traveling to their training camps. Fortunately, they were rescued six days later from a forest in Owerri West. The DSS arrested the suspects in operations conducted between October 10 and 14 in Port Harcourt and Aba.
