Former Deputy Governors Urge Overhaul of Nigeria’s Leadership Recruitment Process

The Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria has called for major changes in how the country selects its leaders. They believe this is necessary to improve the connection between political leaders and citizens. This message was shared in a 16-point statement at the end of their recent conference in Abuja.

The two-day conference, themed “Rethinking Nation-Building,” was chaired by former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari. The forum emphasized that for Nigeria’s democracy to succeed, the process of choosing leaders must be improved. They stated that only credible individuals should be allowed to lead, as this would help regain citizens’ trust.

To address growing public distrust in government, the forum suggested that the Federal Government should adopt a clear communication strategy. This would involve public officials being open and honest about both successes and challenges, which could help reduce suspicion towards the government.

The group also highlighted the importance of hiring based on merit in public service. They argued that recruitment should focus on competence and character, ensuring that only qualified individuals are chosen for government jobs. They called for clear standards to be set for public service to improve efficiency and accountability.

In addition to governance reforms, the forum discussed economic development and youth empowerment. They urged the government to utilize the country’s young population and natural resources to promote growth. They also recommended creating inclusive governance structures that support women, youth, and marginalized groups.

Other recommendations included improving teachers’ salaries, setting up local assemblies for better communication between citizens and their representatives, and enhancing programs for reintegrating ex-convicts into society. The forum also praised the government for its efforts to maintain security but called for continued investment in defense capabilities.
