Kogi Pension Commission Confirms ₦278 Million Paid to Retired Judges Amid Controversy
The Kogi State Pension Commission announced that it has paid over ₦278 million to 15 retired judges who have not yet received their full retirement benefits. This statement was made in response to allegations regarding how retirement funds are managed in the state.
The Commission’s Director-General, Hajia Mariam Ozioma Abedo, said the payments were made from January to the present and were based on verified entitlements and available government funds. The statement was issued on Saturday, following comments made by Mutalubi Ojo Adebayo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, about the retirement benefits of judicial officers in Kogi State.
While the Commission acknowledged the right of citizens and legal professionals to demand transparency, it criticized Adebayo for using offensive language and making sweeping accusations against Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and former Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello. The Commission emphasized that the government recognizes the contributions of retired judges and is committed to fulfilling its obligations to them.
The Commission urged Adebayo to provide specific examples of any mismanagement of retirement benefits and to seek clarification from the relevant authorities. It explained that the government must balance its responsibilities to retirees with funding for essential services like salaries, education, and healthcare.
The statement also rejected derogatory terms used against Governor Ododo, arguing that such language does not prove any wrongdoing regarding retirement payments. The Commission challenged Adebayo to present credible evidence if he believes that any payment decisions have been improperly influenced.
Furthermore, the Commission called for Adebayo to retract his statements and apologize within 24 hours, warning that failure to do so could lead to formal complaints against him. It stressed the importance of maintaining professional standards and dignity in public discourse.
In conclusion, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with retired judges and ensuring the responsible management of retirement benefits, stating that accurate information and respect for professional responsibilities are crucial.
