Edo State Leaders Settle Labour Dispute, Electricity to Be Restored Soon

Electricity supply is expected to return in Edo State after Governor Monday Okpebholo and labour leaders reached an agreement over the recognition of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) caretaker committee. This resolution came after a closed-door meeting in Abuja, facilitated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

Key figures at the meeting included NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, Minister of Labour and Employment Dr. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and former Edo State Governor Senator Adams Oshiomhole. Following the discussions, Governor Okpebholo announced that the state government would recognize the caretaker committee and collaborate with labour leaders to plan a proper election.

Governor Okpebholo stated, “There is no issue actually, and we have resolved the issues that border the NLC caretaker committee in Edo.” Ajaero also confirmed the agreement and expressed gratitude to those involved in reaching the settlement.

Ajaero mentioned that they would work together with the state government to recognize the caretaker committee and organize an election, while ensuring the rights of the committee are respected. He added, “Consequently, power will be restored in Edo.”

Oshiomhole described the earlier dispute as a misunderstanding that has now been cleared up. He emphasized the need for renewed cooperation to maintain peace between the state government and labour organizations.

Minister Dingyadi noted that the NLC plans to hold a proper election in the state within three to six months. He assured that electricity would be restored immediately, stating, “The principal issue, which is electricity, is going to be restored immediately.”
