Ofala Festival Celebrates 25 Years of Leadership and Cultural Heritage in Onitsha

The Ofala Festival in Onitsha, Anambra State, is currently taking place, celebrating its 25th year under the leadership of Obi Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe. This year’s festival, held in October, is a vibrant showcase of the rich cultural heritage of the Onitsha people.

The festival began with a period of silence at the royal palace, where the Obi was in seclusion to connect with ancestors and seek blessings for his people. The silence was broken by the sound of traditional drums, signaling the Obi’s return to the public. His entrance was marked by ceremonial dances that symbolize prosperity and stability for the coming year.

This year’s theme was “Igba Mbo, Iga N’Iru,” which translates to “Strive and Advance.” The event drew hundreds of visitors and dignitaries who witnessed traditional dances performed by the Onitsha high chiefs, dressed in ceremonial attire. The Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Edward Ibuzoh, praised the high chiefs for their role in representing their communities.

Senator Tony Nwoye also spoke at the festival, highlighting the Obi’s contributions to the community and the Igbo people worldwide. He noted that the king has worked hard to improve infrastructure in Onitsha and unite the Igbo diaspora.

Among the attendees was American scholar Professor Richard Henderson, who traveled from Tucson, Arizona, to attend the festival. He expressed his amazement at how much the event has evolved since his first visit in the 1960s.

During the festival, the Obi addressed pressing issues facing Nigeria, including economic hardship and insecurity. He urged the government to take action to help citizens struggling with these challenges. He also encouraged residents of the South-East region to participate in upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of voting.
