Army Chief Visits Borno to Address Terrorism Following Presidential Orders
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, arrived in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, to respond to President Bola Tinubu’s recent orders aimed at combating terrorism in Nigeria. This visit came just two days after the President directed security forces to rescue all kidnapped individuals and eliminate terrorist camps across the country.
General Shuaibu, along with senior security officials, met with military commanders at the Northeast Joint Taskforce Operation Hadin Kai headquarters. He also held discussions with Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum about the security situation in the area.
During a closed-door meeting with military officers, the Army Chief emphasized the importance of professionalism and dedication among the troops. He expressed satisfaction with their morale and urged them to stay committed to their mission to combat insurgency.
Governor Zulum requested the military to launch a significant operation around Lake Chad to clear insurgents threatening northern Borno communities. He noted that recent attacks in the area were linked to the presence of these insurgents and urged for swift action.
The governor also asked for the establishment of more military formations in strategic locations and for efforts to reopen the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu Road to improve transportation.
In addition, Zulum praised the Army for training and deploying 1,000 forest guards to assist in security operations. He assured that his administration would support their deployment to enhance security in the state.
General Shuaibu acknowledged the cooperation from the Borno State Government and reiterated the military’s commitment to restoring peace and normalcy in the region, allowing socio-economic activities to flourish.
President Tinubu had previously instructed military leaders to ensure no terrorist or criminal groups could maintain camps in Nigeria, emphasizing the need to rescue all abducted individuals.
