Nigerian Communications Commission Urges Collaboration on Internet Governance Issues
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to tackle growing internet governance challenges. These challenges include artificial intelligence (AI), online fraud, privacy issues, and protecting vulnerable internet users. The appeal was made on Friday during the inaugural NCC Internet Governance Symposium held in Lagos.
Abraham Oshadami, the Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, spoke on behalf of Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He highlighted that decisions regarding the internet go beyond just technology and connectivity; they impact opportunities, trust, security, and the rights of users.
Oshadami noted that the rapid growth of AI is transforming how people learn, work, and communicate, while also raising concerns about harmful content, fraud, and child protection. He emphasized that addressing these issues requires cooperation across the communications sector and beyond, as no single organization can tackle them alone.
He introduced the NCC’s Internet Code of Practice (ICOP) 2026, which aims to create a safer online environment. The success of this initiative will depend on clear expectations, effective stakeholder engagement, and consistent implementation. He also mentioned the Cyber Resilience Framework for the Nigeria Communication Sector (CRF-NCS), designed to enhance the security and resilience of digital service infrastructure.
A significant part of the symposium was the launch of the Internet Governance Working Group. This group will provide a platform for ongoing stakeholder engagement, helping to strengthen dialogue and identify practical priorities for Nigeria’s digital environment.
Oshadami encouraged participants to contribute openly and constructively during the symposium. He expressed gratitude to all attendees and called for continued cooperation to achieve a safer and more responsible digital future for Nigeria.
