COP17 Summit in Armenia Brings Together Nations to Address Biodiversity Goals

Nearly 200 nations are meeting in Yerevan, Armenia, starting October 16, 2026, to discuss urgent actions needed to protect nature. This gathering, known as COP17, comes as many governments are under pressure to fulfill their commitments to a global nature agreement made four years ago.

The agreement aimed to halt and reverse the destruction of nature by 2030. However, progress has been slow, with key goals, such as protecting 30 percent of the world’s land and oceans, lagging behind. Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan acknowledged the challenges, stating, “We must honestly admit that collectively, we are not yet on track as needed.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the urgency of the situation, describing a “war on nature” that threatens the planet’s future. He called for more action and accountability, urging nations to reflect on whether they are doing enough.

A report from the United Nations highlighted that while some progress has been made toward biodiversity targets, it is not enough to meet the 2030 deadline. A significant issue at the summit will be funding, as there is a considerable gap in necessary financial support for biodiversity initiatives.

Wealthy nations are pushing for large emerging economies, such as China, to contribute to biodiversity finance. There is also a focus on encouraging private companies to support conservation efforts in developing countries. Guterres criticized governments for continuing to subsidize fossil fuels, calling it a dangerous practice that harms biodiversity.

This summit is one of the largest international events hosted by Armenia, with thousands of visitors expected over the next two weeks. The hosts have stressed the importance of taking action rather than just making new promises, highlighting that the world already has a vision for conservation.
