The Federal Government and Lagos State are working together to provide reliable electricity to the Lagos area. This initiative is part of a new pilot program called the 24/7 Energy Zones, which was approved by President Bola Tinubu.
The agreement was reached during a meeting at the Lagos House, where the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, met with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other officials. The program will not only start in Lagos but will also expand to other key regions like Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Enugu, and Port Harcourt.
Minister Tegbe mentioned that the Ministry of Power has secured commitments from electricity distribution companies to deliver steady power to customers in Lagos. He emphasized the importance of four key areas: stabilizing the power grid, improving market conditions, expanding the grid, and harmonizing regulations.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the federal team for their commitment to resolving ongoing issues in the power sector. He assured that Lagos is equally dedicated to finding practical solutions to improve electricity supply for its residents and businesses.
To ensure effective implementation, a Joint Technical Committee has been formed. This committee will tackle complex issues and suggest next steps. It is led by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Electricity System Operator and includes members from various energy and regulatory agencies.
The committee will report to a Steering Committee co-chaired by the Governor and the Minister of Power, which includes other key officials from both the federal and state governments.
