Nine-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Setting Fire That Killed Family Members in Yobe
A nine-year-old boy has been arrested in Yobe State, Nigeria, after he allegedly set a house on fire, resulting in the deaths of his two stepmothers and two younger brothers. The incident occurred in Rugan Badali, located in the Karasuwa Local Government Area.
According to the Nigeria Police Force, the boy had previously been accused of stealing a chicken and was punished by his father. In an interview, the boy admitted to starting the fire as revenge for the beating he received. He explained that he bought matches for a small amount of money and ignited the house while his family was asleep.
After the fire broke out, the boy initially called for help but did not confess to his actions until three days later, following a period of prayer. Police later arrested him and brought him to Damaturu.
Abubakar Idi, the boy’s father, was also present during the police announcement. The Police Relations Officer for Yobe State, ASP Yusuf Adamu-Ali, stated that although the boy is a minor, he would not be released. This decision aims to discourage other children from engaging in similar unlawful behavior.
The incident raises concerns, especially as the region works to recover from the impacts of the Boko Haram insurgency.
