Nigeria’s Farmers Face Major Losses Due to Climate Change Impact on Food Production

Nigeria’s farmers are struggling with the effects of climate change, which is causing erratic rainfall, dry spells, flooding, and rising temperatures. These changes are disrupting farming activities and leading to significant financial losses, according to agricultural experts.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has warned of unpredictable rainfall patterns for the upcoming seasons. Some areas will experience early rains, while others, like Borno State, may see delays. This unpredictability is making it difficult for farmers to plan their planting schedules.

Dr. Nkechi Okafor, chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, emphasized that climate change poses a serious threat to food production. She noted that many farmers can no longer rely on traditional planting calendars, leading to reduced crop yields and increased food insecurity.

Farmers have reported losses running into billions of Naira due to these climate-related issues. For example, some farmers have lost up to 40% of their expected harvest because of unexpected weather conditions. Experts are calling for urgent measures to help farmers adapt, including better irrigation systems and climate-smart agricultural practices.

In addition to financial losses, farmers are facing challenges from pests and diseases, which are becoming more prevalent due to changing weather conditions. The situation is particularly dire in northern Nigeria, where desertification is worsening.

Experts believe that without significant investment in agricultural infrastructure and support for farmers, the situation will continue to deteriorate. They are urging the government to provide better access to resources and information to help farmers cope with the ongoing climate crisis.
