First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Demands Youth Mindset Overhaul as Red Cross Names Her Grand Matron in Abuja

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has made a strong appeal to voluntary and humanitarian organizations nationwide, urging them to actively reshape the perspectives of young Nigerians by drawing them into community service at an early age.

Speaking at the State House in Abuja after her formal investiture as the Grand Matron of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that the culture of selflessness must be intentionally cultivated during childhood rather than left to chance in adulthood. She noted that early involvement in charity work builds a natural foundation for compassionate citizenship, adding that if children grasp the essence of helping others early on, humanitarian service becomes second nature as they grow older.

The ceremonial honor places the First Lady in a traditional supportive role alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was appointed the society’s Grand Patron in 2023. Accepting the position, Mrs. Tinubu described the title as a direct call to scale up her ongoing charitable efforts, reflecting warmly on her personal background with voluntary groups like the Girls’ Guide during her primary school days.

While addressing the country’s broader socioeconomic pressures, the First Lady expressed absolute confidence in the administration’s trajectory, maintaining that no national obstacle is too big to handle when guided by purposeful leadership.

“There is no challenge that is insurmountable if we have the right will, and we have strong political will, to do right by the nation,” First Lady Oluremi Tinubu stated during the investiture. “Our assignment is a daily call to duty and we have to rise every day to do the work. I encourage people, if you have the capacity to help a neighbor in whatever way you can, do so. Whatever you do in secret, God has a way of rewarding you openly.”

Beyond the philosophical push for youth volunteerism, the First Lady touched upon practical interventions being deployed by her office to protect vulnerable demographics. She pointed to the steady expansion of the National Food Bank Programme, an initiative running across all six geopolitical zones specifically designed to target and eliminate child malnutrition and related health crises like kwashiorkor.

Welcoming the First Lady into the organization’s high command, the National President of the NRCS, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, praised her consistent track record of prioritizing women, children, and vulnerable families through the platforms of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

Adeaga observed that her formal acceptance comes at a critical time when inflation and local displacements have heightened the need for structured aid across various regional communities. He noted that behind the cold statistics often reported are real families in distress, making the active mobilization of the society’s 1.5 million volunteers more crucial than ever.

To future-proof these interventions, the Red Cross leadership also announced concrete plans to launch the Nigeria Academy for Humanitarian Studies, a dedicated research and professional development hub designed to elevate humanitarian education and training standards across the federation.
