Governor Bago Reveals 500,000 Displaced by Bandits in Niger State; Tinubu Orders Military to Flush Out Criminals from National Park

A massive humanitarian crisis has hit Niger State, with Governor Umaru Bago announcing that 500,000 residents have been displaced by “persistent and wicked” bandit attacks. Speaking on Monday, March 16, 2026, during a food distribution event in Borgu, the Governor painted a sad picture of families who have lost everything and are now hiding in bushes or living in neighboring states.

The situation has become so bad that many Nigerians have even crossed the border into the Benin Republic to find safety. Governor Bago explained that the Borgu National Park, which should be a place for nature, has been taken over by criminal networks. These bandits use the forest to launch attacks, burn houses, and kidnap innocent people.

To “flip the script” on these criminals, President Bola Tinubu has given a direct order for security agencies to move into the park and clear it out completely. The government plans to turn the area into a high-security zone with permanent bases for the army and police. “We are working round the clock to make sure our people come back home,” the Governor promised.

While the security forces prepare for their mission, the government is focusing on keeping the victims alive. Thousands of families in the Borgu Emirate received rice, beans, and medical supplies today to help them through this difficult time. The Governor appealed for patience, promising that the days of the bandits are numbered.
