Abia Residents Groan as Petrol Hits Record Highs; Commuters Trek in Umuahia While Gov. Otti Deploys Subsidized ‘Green Shuttles’

The “State of Harmony” in Abia’s transportation sector was shattered on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, as petrol prices in Umuahia and Aba spiraled out of control, hitting an eye-watering ₦1,500 per litre in some outlets. The surge, triggered by the ongoing global energy crisis and volatile gantry pricing at the Dangote Refinery, has left thousands of commuters stranded and forced many to resort to the “sole-power” of trekking to their destinations.

In Umuahia, the morning began with a flicker of hope as some stations sold at ₦1,280, but by sunset, the price tag had jumped to ₦1,500, prompting commercial tricycle and bus operators to “flip the script” on their fare charts. A trip to Umudike, which previously cost ₦400, now requires ₦700, while inter-city travel has become a luxury many can no longer afford. “This is beyond a crisis; it is a battle for survival,” lamented a vegetable seller at Orie-Ugba market, who noted that the cost of transporting her produce now exceeds the value of the goods themselves.

Recognizing the brewing emergency, Governor Alex Otti’s administration has moved to scale up its intervention. The state’s “Green Shuttle” mass transit scheme, which had been operating as a free pilot, officially transitioned into a subsidized paid service this week. By using the “Abia Connect Card,” residents can access a 50% discount on fares, a move intended to “smash the monopoly” of the rising petrol costs.

Additionally, the state’s newly launched electric buses are being touted as the ultimate shield against global oil shocks. With fixed subsidized rates of ₦800 for the Umuahia-Aba route, the government hopes to provide a stable alternative to the fuel-dependent private sector. However, as independent marketers warn that the ₦1,500 price may become the new “normal” if the Middle East conflict continues, Abians are calling on the federal government to act swiftly before the 2027 political cycle is completely overshadowed by the high cost of simply moving from one street to the next.
