Police to Enforce Tinted Glass Permit from October 2
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that it will begin the full enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Decree 1991 on October 2, 2025. The enforcement will apply to all vehicles with tinted windows that do not have a valid, police-issued permit.
According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, approved a further extension of the grace period to accommodate a significant increase in applications on the official POSSAP portal. This extension, he said, will allow for the meticulous scrutiny of applications to ensure permits are issued only to eligible individuals for legitimate health or security reasons.
DCP Adejobi warned motorists against patronizing unauthorized individuals or groups who claim to process permits, as the only official channel is the online portal at www.possap.gov.ng
. The police also clarified that while the permit document itself is free, a processing fee is required to cover the maintenance of the digital infrastructure and the biometric capture process.
The move is part of the police force’s ongoing efforts to enhance national security and curb criminal activities, such as kidnapping and armed robbery, often perpetrated with the use of vehicles with unapproved tinted glass. The police have also provided a dedicated hotline, 09169967000, for citizens to report any form of extortion or unauthorized processing by officers. Drivers found in violation of the law after the October 2 deadline will face legal sanctions, which include fines and potential imprisonment.
